EDITORIAL 31.10.2014 “H2020: how to do even better next time”
Editorial of the NCP Newsletter of 31 October 2014, by Tania Van Loon Dear reader, 9 months after the inception of the new Research and Innovation programme “Horizon 2020”, the European Commission, participants and intermediary organisations have learnt the first lessons. In brief? The large response to the first calls has shown the attractiveness of a challenge-based approach… but has also reduced the success rate of applicants (8 times oversubscription vs. 5.5 under the previous programme). Evaluation reports suggest that applicants should carefully define specific objectives, quantitative indicators, end users involvement and project positioning in a market-based approach. What does this mean for Brussels organisations? Prepare well to make your proposal attractive. NCP Brussels’ free of charge services can help you maximise your project design, select relevant impact indicators, include public and restricted deliverables, involve final beneficiaries... And specifically for SMEs? The SME Instrument budget will be increased in the work programme of 2016-2017 as compared to that of 2014-2015. Thus, there will be very attractive opportunities for you. Check with us which upcoming topics are relevant to your research and future business deployment. We wish you successful European R&I projects! Tania Van Loon, NCP Brussels Manager

The place of Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities in European programmes.
Horizon 2020 is designed in such a way that Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) is fully embedded in all of the programme pillars of Horizon 2020. SSH is viewed as both a cross-cutting issue of relevance and as an essential element to maximize the societal impact of research. The question is how has this goal of “embedding” SSH actually been implemented, if at all, in the first Work Programmes of Horizon 2020? A newly published NET4SOCIETY report aims to shed light on this question.
