Cluster 1 Health

Cluster 1, ‘Health’, aims to meet EU goals and priorities on promoting and protecting human health and well-being, preventing diseases and decreasing the burden of diseases and disabilities on people and communities, supporting the transformation of health care systems and fostering an innovative, sustainable, and globally competitive European health industry

To tackle these issues, Cluster Health defined six Intervention Areas:

  • Health throughout the Life Course
  • Environment and Social Health Determinants
  • Non-communicable and Rare Diseases
  • Infectious diseases
  • Tools, Technologies, and Digital Solutions for Health and Care
  • Health Care Systems

Cluster 1 is organized into six Destinations or Expected Impacts:

Destination 1: Staying healthy in a rapidly changing society

Destination 2: Living and working in a health-promoting environment

Destination 3: Tackling diseases and reducing disease burden

Destination 4: Ensuring access to innovative, sustainable, and high-quality healthcare

Destination 5: Unlocking the full potential of new tools, technologies, and digital solutions for a healthy society

Destination 6: Maintaining an innovative, sustainable, and globally competitive health-related industry

The 2025 Work Programme of Cluster 1 Health will be published in April. In the meantime, you can contact us to receive the leaked draft. You can also visit the Funding and Tenders Portal to view the published topics individually.

Mission Cancer

The goal of the Mission Cancer is to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030, through prevention, cure, and for those affected by cancer, including their families, to live longer and better, jointly with the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. A mission is a portfolio of actions across disciplines intended to achieve a bold, inspirational, and measurable goal within a set timeframe, with impact for society and policy making, and relevance for a significant part of the European population and a wide range of European citizens.

The Four Mission objectives are:

1. Understanding cancer

2 . Prevention & early detection

3. Diagnosis and treatment

4. Quality of life

European Partnerships

Brussels-based entities are eligible for funding for the following two institutionalised EU Partnerships:

EDCTP is a public-private partnership between countries in Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, supported by the EU. It funds research for medical tools to detect, treat, and prevent poverty-related infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

IHI is a partnership for health research and innovation between the EU and Europe’s life science industries. It covers the entire continuum of care, from prevention and diagnostics to treatment and disease management. IHI is the successor of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), the world’s largest public-private collaboration in life sciences.

What about other EU partnerships and the participation of Brussels-based organizations?

Brussels-based entities can participate in the co-funded partnerships where a Belgian organisation is involved. However, a Brussels-based entities can only receive funding if Brussels Region funders (FNRS or Innoviris) are financially contributing to cascading calls. The co-funded Partnerships are:

HNN3.0 – An EU network of Health NCPs to support applicants

hub.brussels is a partner of HNN3.0, a network of National Contact Points (NCPs) in the domain of “Health”, enhancing transnational cooperation between NCPs for Cluster 1 Health in Horizon Europe to increase the support for those interested in research funding.  HNN3.0 provides resources for applicants, organises European-wide brokerage events, and informs stakeholders about opportunities (events, calls, etc.) via its monthly newsletter (subscribe here).
