Celebrating five years of Open Research Europe (ORE) – upcoming webinars “An Introduction to Open Research Europe”

Open Research Europe (ORE), the open access publishing platform designed to support Horizon Europe beneficiaries and the broader research community marks it’s fifth anniversary.

Hereunder you will find a detailed message from Marc Lemaître, Director-General for Research and Innovation, outlining ORE’s steady progress and growth, its transparent and innovative publishing model, and the exciting developments ahead, notably the expanded eligibility to publish beyond EU-funded researchers starting in autumn 2026.

“I am delighted to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Open Research Europe (ORE), the open access scholarly publishing platform provided by the European Commission.

Since its launch in March 2021, ORE has supported EU-funded beneficiaries, and particularly those funded by Horizon Europe, with high-quality, transparent, and equitable open access scholarly publishing without author fees. It offers an innovative publishing model built on rigorous, transparent post-publication peer review, thereby advancing knowledge for the public good, strengthening the quality of research outputs and fostering a more collaborative and agile research process, in line with open science.

ORE enables rapid and open sharing of research throughout the research process through a variety of article types, supporting timely dissemination and collaboration, while a wide range of research outputs can be published with proper credit to all contributors and reused through open licensing. Transparency, rigor and credit for authors and reviewers are its hallmarks.

Over the past five years, ORE has seen a steady growth and uptake amongst our grantees. The platform has published more than 1,300 articles, involving over 6,300 authors from over 3,000 institutions, alongside contributions from more than 3,000 peer reviewers. This upward trajectory is also reflected in submission volumes, which have more than doubled since 2021. ORE submissions show a broad and geographically diverse uptake. Participation spans major research hubs as well as smaller and emerging contributors, reflecting widespread adoption across the European continent and well beyond, highlighting ORE’s growing international reach and appeal.

I invite you to become part of this dynamic community by submitting your articles to ORE and exploring its innovative features. The platform not only offers early sharing of work and open peer review, but also fosters transparent academic dialogue, thereby enhancing the quality and integrity of your research outputs.

As beneficiaries of EU funding, you have the opportunity to publish on ORE without any fees, taking advantage of its post-publication open peer review model.

To learn more about ORE and discover how it can benefit your research projects, I invite you to attend one of our upcoming webinars in May, specifically designed for prospective authors. These events will provide insights into ORE’s main features and guide you on leveraging the platform for your research needs. You will have the opportunity to register by clicking on one of the following links:

Wednesday 6th May (11-12.30 CET)

Tuesday 12th May (11-12.30 CET)

As we celebrate ORE’s achievements, I also take this opportunity to inform you of the next phase that we will embark on as of autumn 2026. This exciting development, backed by funding from research institutions across Europe, will broaden the platform’s reach beyond EU funding beneficiaries, promoting cross-border collaboration, equity, and diversity in scholarly publishing. So far, 11 countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland) have committed to support ORE, enabling wider access for researchers, beyond those with EU funding.

I encourage you to stay updated on ORE’s developments by visiting the platform or following our social media accounts, and by sharing this message with your collaborators and networks.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours faithfully,

Marc Lemaître”
