Practical guidance for valorisation of multidisciplinary research and innovation results

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) has published a new Practical Guidance for Valorisation of Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation Results, developed within the framework of the European Research Area (ERA) Policy Agenda 2025–2027.

This guidance is designed to help research and innovation projects maximise the value of their results and translate knowledge into meaningful societal, economic and policy impacts. It is particularly relevant for projects generating multidisciplinary outcomes, including those involving Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH).

A Valuable Resource for Horizon Europe Projects

For Horizon Europe applicants and beneficiaries, the publication offers practical support in planning and implementing effective pathways to impact from the earliest stages of a project.

The guidance encourages project teams to think strategically about how research results can be taken up by users, stakeholders and decision-makers, helping them move from scientific outputs towards tangible benefits for society, industry and public policy.

Ten Pathways from Research to Impact

Based on a comprehensive review of existing good practices, the publication presents 10 practical and inspirational valorisation pathways, including:

  • Human-centred technology and innovation
  • Participatory and co-creative approaches
  • Entrepreneurship and business creation
  • Organisational transformation
  • Evidence-informed policymaking
  • And other routes to long-term societal impact

These pathways illustrate different ways research outcomes can be transformed into value and provide concrete examples to inspire project teams across disciplines.

Interactive Tools and Practical Checklists

One of the key features of the guidance is its interactive decision trees, which help projects identify the pathways that best match their results or desired impacts.

The publication also includes practical checklists and examples to support project teams in:

  • Identifying relevant users and beneficiaries
  • Engaging partners and intermediaries
  • Designing effective valorisation strategies
  • Planning concrete next steps towards impact
